I have relistened to 12/28/79 recently and am listening to 12/26/79. If you too the highlights of both shows, it sure would make one great show.

Selecting one, though, is tough. I definitely prefer the first set of the 28th by a big margin. Although I love the Terrapin and jam out of Playin from the 28th, the post drums segment is not that great. I prefer the second set of the 26th though and the unusual encore leads me to end up selecting the 26th in a very tough call.

This is a tough call... but I made the call to favor the 28th... It is like choosing, for me, between pizza and cheesecake (don't ask which show is which), you are going to be pleased either way.

The encore from the 26th is probably the superior encore for the entire year...

12/28. Tighter show and a little jammier.
12/26 is a great show but a little overrated. Some of the flubs ruin the flow of Estimated, He's Gone and Other One, which are otherwise titanic.

I had to go with 12/28. The Alabama to start the 2nd set is a keeper!

Not a dull show from 12/26 - 12/31....went with 12/28 due to better setlist, execution and sound quality. I still stay true to my favorite show of the run - NYE!

12/26 gets bonus points for featuring a Black Throated Wind soundcheck....it's on the archive but VERY bad SQ....Jerry flies!

Are you sure you do not want to include the really good Terrapin here as well.

Yeah, that's quite the omission Swami, as I recall you turning me on to that TS.

For me the 28th is just a hot show with a great space section at the end of Playin'. But the 26th is epic. I think most of the flubs, and all of the awesome, come from several band members being dosed. Just a theory....

My favorite bits:

I've stated elsewhere that, IMHO, a show's greatness is derived entirely from the stature of the 2nd set. So the ho-hum set list from set 1 is neither here nor there. And, ho-hum or not, there are 11 songs played. A nice little warm-up. Very Happy

UJB: Was a song ever reintroduced with greater flair, better placement, and more sublime Garciafaction? No. The instrumental between the verses get me every time. Garcia's improvisation is entirely unique and truly inspired.

Estimated > He's Gone >The Other One: Yes, yes, and fuckin'-A, yes. Sloppy? Yup. Most excellent? Turn it up.

Space > NFA: This is one of my favorite space bits. It partakes of what we in the business call "super-schmebblo." I think you know what I mean.

Brokedown: I love the mega-mondo-mysterioso arrival of this tune in this exceedingly unusual spot in the show. There is a Fated-by-Nostradamus quality to the whole thing.

A&A > JBG: Does this complete a Chuck Berry hat-trick? Yes it does.

Encore: Was there ever a better encore by this we-hate-encores band? No.

Vote yes for 12/26/79 and possibly win a fabulous prize.

12/26 is in my regular rotation. Always kicks ass! I am not familiar with 12/28...but I will be by the end of the day. I was living in Tahoe at this time and had tix for this show(12/26). Gave them away and went back to N.Y. for Christmas instead. Sad

12/28/79 was in the March Deadness... I am appalled that everyone didn't listen to it 20 times!!! Just kidding.

Both of these shows are outstanding, to say the least... it is a hard vote, and I could go either way on a given day.

I might have to agree with Z's assessment that the 26th has the best encore ever... and I definitely agree that while the pre-drums has some sloppiness to it, it is also GREAT!

It is a tough call. I used to really think 12/26 was way overrated, but despite the flubs it is pretty intense and the encore is amazing. Also the Alabama>Promised Land to end set 1 is "the tits" But, is it as good as the Bama>GSET on 12/28, with the most perfect transition ever? Shocked

Tizi, from Oct-Dec is pretty much magic... there are a couple of exceptions, but for the most part, great stuff from late 1979.

I'll keep this in mind!
See Ijust don't understand why people say that with Brent the band would have lost "something" in suptility and gained in energy.
I think this idea to be wrong I just love Brent's organ, his back up singing.
Besides .... screaming Donna was out!!!!!!

Sorry friends maybe it will take some time for me to get used to her voice expecially in PITB her "ya-ya-ya" is as anoying as the weird horn sounds at the World Soccer Cup in SA!

Wow, 12-26 is fantastic. That must be the best UJB I've ever heard. If I were to vote right now I'd go 12-26, but I have liked 12-28 for a long time and want to check it out again before I do anything rash.

The only criticism I have of 12-26 is that there are moments, even in the second set, where Jerry could be louder.

Yeah, but my first take on NFA is that there is where the low-in-the-mixness of Jerry's guitar is a fatal flaw. Brokedown Palace is nice of course. The pre-drums [CENSORED] is pretty exciting, the jam transition from Estimated>He's Gone is crazy and was unexpected, me not having memorized the set list and all. Clearly a great show.

OK, I voted. In the end I had to go with 12-28. As exciting as 12-26 is at times, repeated listens didn't enhance my opinion of it; at times even when Jerry's guitar is loud it still doesn't seem to ring out just right, there's something weird with the tone, almost as though the guitar is struggling to be heard, it's a little scratchy or something. The primary example of this is UJB, I know I'm not explaining it well but I imagine anyone going back and listening after reading this will hear what I mean. 12-26 is a really good show with some very exciting moments but I think 12-28 holds up better before the court of eternity.
