I'm looking for some good shows on a band I pretty much just discovered. I heard a few songs over the last few years and didn't think to much of it. But the other day I got a copy of 5/15/70 at the Filmore East and loved it. I wish there was more great steal pedal guitar of Jerry out there, but other then New Riders and the first solo album it seems kinda rare.

Jerry's pedal steel aside, I've never much cared for NRPS myself. I do, however, enjoy hearing what was going on between Dead sets at some of those all-time great shows. A bunch of those are at archive.org. If I had to pick one to take on a roadtrip with me, though, I guess I'd pick this one:

I think some of these tracks were used as bonuses on the latest issue of the first NRPS album, so I guess that's saying something.

You may also dig this one, with Jerry, Bob, Keith & Donna all turning up in spots (during the Dead's night off during their Nassau Coliseum shows in March 73):

heh, the NRPS were one of the first shows I saw, though. I was like 13 and my dad took me to see them in a bar and I remember thinking, "wait a minute, which of these guys is Jerry Garcia?" Smile

There is a officially released recording of NRPS from the 72 Veneta show. It's pretty good. If you are new to them, IMO the first album, Powerglide and Home, Home on the Road (live) are the best records. There seems to be a decent amount of NRPS out there. I used to really dig them but sometimes John Dawson's voice annoys me - too pleading and dramatic. Or something.
Also regarding Garcia's pedal steel playing, quite a bit of the mid-late 69 and some 70 semi acoustic GD has him doing steel on certain songs, and for recorded stuff, have you ever listened to Kantner/Starship's Blowas Against the Empire or David Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name? Great pedal steel work, especially on the song Laughing
