Please name me some great auds made in the rain that sound great, but still sound like they're actually in the rain. I'm focusing on atmosphere and ambiance just as much as the actual quality of the music. Maybe it's just me, but recordings like this can sometimes be just the thing for vicarious headphone listening. Very Happy

Pre- and post-Brent eras apply as well. But all the examples I can think of fall in this period, I'm posting this here.

I'm talking about stuff like:

8/16/80: This is the winner for me. Listen to the Ship of Fools. I can almost smell the wet mud during Estimated. So nice.

6/20/83: An overrated show, imho, but I dig the crowd response more than the music. Wharf Rat is the exception, when Phil responds to the lightning with those four earthquaking bombs.

7/12/90: This fob sounds amazing, though I don't know that I'd know it was raining unless I had read about it. It sounds so good that I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.

80's heads, help me out here. I need some more suggestions.

Well... you got me... perhaps some heads who were there at the time could shed some more rain on this for you.

For a show with an eruption during FOTM, 6/12/80... though you can't hear the eruption of course... I really just wanted to plug that show for the amazing Estimated Prophet it has.

6/20/83 was intense. I was there (in the orchestra pit hahahah!!!) but that was no "rain storm" It was a full, god is angry, massive, scary lightning-n-thunderstorm. It washed a little bridge out that was near the ampitheatre entrance. It's amazing folks got good recordings. Clearly all of them were in the pavillion. Yes it is a sloppy show at points, but very intense. Also, it was loud as [CENSORED] that night. The next night they calmed down a little bit and played a more cohesive show.
Other rain shows with good aud recordings:
6/24/84 Saratoga
6/28/85 Hershey (drizzle)
7/13/89 RFK (I think)

This is still on my mind. 7/28/82 has some rain action (more than 7/29?), kinda audible between songs in the first set, and helped by some Bobby asides about the weather. It probably helps explain why Jim Wise's buddy was so cranky that night Very Happy

And it's not Brent-era, but the second set from 6/30/95 definitely makes the A-list for rain auds. How did I forget about the Rain>Box of>Samba in the>Looks Like Rain set?

I love how about 90 seconds into the tuning track, you can hear the drummers responding to the thunder. It really does sound like the rain starts coming down harder as they start singing "Raaaaaaaiiiiin...I don't mind!"

Where you at that 95 show?
I think they did a similar "rain" set at 7/20/94 as well... have no idea how it comes through over the AUD though, I have only heard the SBD.

It also rained for part of the show at 7/4/86 Rich Stadium. I was threatening, then sprinkling on and off for the 1st set, but right before or during CR&S it started really raining and then they went into Fire and it REALLY started up. Then it stopped. Crazy!

I was not. My search for rainy auds has nothing to do with nostalgia (I only saw them play indoors, though, so maybe it's more wishful thinking) as it does with my own eccentric listening habits. They certainly played enough shows in the rain, but I want to HEAR the ambient effect of what it sounded like, which most tapers were probably trying to cover up (there's another aud of 6/30/95 where the rain hitting near the mics just sounds like noisy pops). Deer Creek 94 may have been pouring, but anyone taping would most likely have been under the pavilion, so it's a moot point. Something like 8/16/80 sounds like you're standing in the rain, yet still sounds quite good.

Didn't the mikes all have little umbrellas anyhow? I mean, just a smaller version of a pavilion really.

Nice thunder (and a big lightning strike) in TMNS, but I also like the banter pre-TJed and how Jer sings, "well you know you're bound to wind up WET" Very Happy

anyone got some more?

(there is no aud recording though, sorry Sad )
