I wasn't at many of those, but oddly I was at 4 in a row (on the list), 3-29-90, 7-12-90, 9-19-90, and 6-17-91. I'm not sure I'd say they were the best of that era that I saw--I'd probably say 10-16-89 before any of those (I know many would disagree) and I might say 6-14-91 over 6-17, although I have never (yet) listened to the recording of set II of 6-17 and I did love the show at the time. I might choose 9-20-90 over 9-19, but I'm not sure. And the first set from 9-18 had certain moments that it is hard to surpass--best To Lay Be Down ever, anyway. 9-19 seems maybe a tiny bit more well-beloved of a recording than is warranted, it's hard to be awash in all those keyboards for such a long time, but it is a great show. But the China Cat from 9-20 is also massively overrated. Hmm. I guess my only clear disagreement with the list regarding shows I attended is the omission of 10-16-89, but perhaps it's hard for that not to be overshadowed by 10-9-89.

I am with you, I prefer 10/16 over 10/9/89... perhaps if the natives get restless, you have a bunker we can hide in?

Thanks...The closest I came would be 9/12/93(a day before) a month out of the Marines....We paid through the nose for those tickets. We paid $80.00 each for a $40.00(I think?) ticket. Really had a good time, and got a pic in front of Balboa right in front of the Spectrum right before the show Very Happy Philly was a wild scene for sure.....PEace

I didn't see any of those, and no b-day shows either. Sad

Of these I saw:
10/12/84
7/1/85
3/27/86
4/6/87
7/30/88
7/12/90

How did 7/30/88 get in there?? I saw this run and thought this show was OK, but nothing special (granted, I was hungover like a dog, and had dust covering every inch of my body, including the insides...) Many superior shows in 88.

And 3/27/86 is an odd choice too. Cool first set, but set 2 is only average. Nice Eyes and Spanish Jam, but otherwise just OK. 3/23, 3/24, 3/28 and 3/30 were much better shows on that tour and there are at least 5 other 86 shows I would rank above 3/27. I wonder if I voted for it?? Confused Confused
Glad to see 4/6/87 gettin some love though!!

Limited voting pool and heavy lobbying in favor of this show got it more recognition than it is worth in my book too...

I find it to be in the Top 5 overrated shows of all time. Very mediocre. The DS is cool, but one song cannot save a show in my book.

Yes, two from 74, five from 89, and three from 93.

Now, I like 89 and 93 for the most part, but this just doesn't add up.

Yes, but I failed to show in the voting booth.

I know, don't vote can't bitch...

Yeah the darkstar is cool, but IMHO the entire second set kicked ass!

I suspect I know the main booster for this show.....
There are at least 10 superior shows in 88 to this one, at least IMO. This is like a Division 3 college sneaking into the NCAA tourney..it will get smacked down in the 1st round.

Totally agree with how the hell 7/30/88 made it in and the other two shows from that run were FAR superior. Was even at them. We could debate this over and over and we will never get a true evenly balanced poll.

I'm OK with what we have. Sure there are some glaring ommissions but we have a unique group here.

So perhaps it's time for another NIT -type invitational where the other shows that came close can get some notice.

For me I'm just glad Englishtown got in!

Yes, and I bet if you look carefully, you could find other examples of the perpetrator doing it for other shows... to paraphrase. Laughing

I'm assuming this is directed at me?

Of course - since I am all over the board lobbying for my favorite shows, right?

Confused Question

Yes, 7-30-88 is easily my favorite show of the Laguna run, despite a great Playin the previous night, and Dew the following night. And certainly one of the most enjoyable performances of the year. I will avoid the word "best" and defer to those who seem to have a better grip on which performances are objectively better than others.

Any other shit-talking? [CENSORED] off.

Jeez, your skin is paper thin!! relax! I also wondered why 3/27/86 got in there.
Much of this is objective. Perhaps I am jealous because some shows I gave props to (9/2/80, 5/8/79) are going to the NIT if they are lucky. I have not listened to 7/30/88 in a long time. I will revisit it and give it my "objective" opinion... Smile

Just because I'm bored today......Is there anyway we can see how many votes each of the shows on the list got?

It might make our skin crawl though. I think we probably all cancelled eachother out on a lot of dates. This would give us say 3 or 4 votes for a show as we split over others.

Here is the alternate Top 64, based solely on votes per show (which may have been the better way to do it actually):
02/14/68

03/01/69
04/26/69
11/08/69

09/19/90
06/17/91
06/23/93
09/13/93

And then a run off voting that would have allowed 4 of the following to fill up the last 4 slots:
03/18/67

While we're griping--which I love--I'll say that I'm pretty sure I like 11-30-80 better than 11-29, but I will check before I say for sure. Pretty darn sure, though.

In response to the voting of 1967, im suprised 10-22-67 didnt get any votes, although i did not vote so uh... :(

But wow man although most of the set is average for 67, theres a killer lovelight and the ungodly epic very first TOO, the first time i heard the cryptical reprise segment i nearly shat myself...

Check it out!

maybe i shouldve posted this in "the pigpen era"

If so kindly move it on over

5-19-66 deserves more than one vote in my opinion, i'm pretty sure that's not even my vote there.

A couple of points.

Most important, I hope we can change the criteria used to select shows. This is tough to do, but I find it hard to accept the notion that shows that got more votes (such as 9/21/72 which got 5 votes with very tough competition), were left out while shows with fewer votes from 93 got in. To use the analogy to the NCAAs, this is like five teams from a so-so conference getting in at the expense of five teams from a top confererence. The question becomes what criterion or criteria to use. How about doing what the NCAA does. Have one or two from each conference combined with AT LARGE teams. At large teams could be voted on head-to head across the specific time frames. This seems a lot fairer to me as it makes such that each "conference" is represented but also means that concerts from tougher time frames get in if they have more votes.

In addition, I think the charge of lobbying is sour grapes in a sense. I am very impressed that each and every one of us comes to OUR OWN conclusions and evaluations. The only way that lobbying works is that it gets us to listen to some shows that we are not familiar with.

The same basic mechanism will be used next year, but year by year instead of era by era. In other words, a year will get x number of possible votes instead of a period of years.
This will keep anomalies like 92-93 ending up being heavily 93 represented, because 93 got most of the votes within the 2 years.
There is the alternate list I posted which would have been compiled from this method which seems more reasonable.

Anyhow, other years that took at hit at the expense of another within their era were 74 (getting crushed by 72), and 91 (getting crushed by 89).
Obviously, our number of voters is the most defining factor... so, in essence, any complaining about the results can be viewed as sour grapes, because this really isn't the end all be all list... in fact, in 1 year's time, we will have a new list, and I reckon that there will be many changes in the top 64... I am fairly certain if we all re-voted right now, it would be far different.
So, in other words, while the title is "top 64", that is pretty tongue in cheek really, and its really just a flawed list of 64 great shows... take it for what its worth, and have fun with it.
