Tuning (?) - defined as free-form warm-up leading into ONLY a 1st or 2nd Set opener.

In other words, no mid-set Tunings allowed.

Inspiration for this thread: 09-22-93 pre-Help tuning...

In general, pre-Help tunings were usually some of the best:

i.e.

08-13-75 Great American - the original ! maybe still the best
10-08-89 Hampton-Warlocks - the breakout - electric atmosphere

Spacey tunings were also great:

i.e.

03-27-88 Hampton - often labeled "Space" to open Set 2.

Can't forget Shakedown tunings of course.

My favorite tuning??? .................................................................................................
........................ Embarassed ................................................
.................. Confused .................................................

03-17-93 Cap Centre - Set 2 - into Picasso Moon !!!!!

Check it izzout.

Your turn, guyz.

the tuning on 6/15/85 that becomes China Cat has always been a favorite of mine...

then there's the cool Middle Eastern sounding tuning on 7/27/82 before they burst into Playing in the Band...

9/6/80 features a long Esatern style tuning befor Playin'...coulda been its own tune...but not a set-opener.

5-13-77: Crazy space/tuning before TMNS

And, since the rules here are clearly too restrictive, I'm going to brazenly break them. Two mid-set favorites:

10-26-89: Two and a half minutes of excellent tuning prior to Dark Star.

12-6-73: It's hard to say where the tuning before Dark Star turns into the actual Dark Star.

re: 12/6/73...
Also, hard to tell when they stopped playing the song and went back into an extended tuning session, sometimes one instrument at a time... Laughing

I can't recall the exact show or if it even occured before a set, but there is a distinct tuning of " All of Me " right before they launch into something. Sorry, but the show escapes me, but it is Jerry just kinda of riffing the tune before they start the next tune. I know it's a lame response, but that was the first thing that came to mind. I want to say it's a 77 or 78 show and I have no clue as to how to even begin to search for it.

Dogstarzz, it is definately on one of the tapes, but that may be a lengthy research project!

This seems like a rather lengthy project indeed. One that I am not sure I can undertake at the moment. Although, if I happen to cross it I will will post it here.

Swami picked a 72 Playin (like a clock it was) for a highlight the other night, it has some different tunings listed

Nobody has mentioned the tuning-jam that kicks off 6 23 74 Jai Alai Fronton 2nd set, generally regarded as a pretty sweet jam.

Well, even if the rules say the tuning must open a set, I'm going to throw 11/7/69 out there. Four songs into the first set, they play four different tunings. If we can't consider that in the "best of" we are clearly taking a shortcut to thinking! And anyway, weren't rules meant to be broken?

Indeed they were... I see no problem with mentioning tunings that are great and not specifically opening the 2nd set...

10 26 69 Winterland has a pretty good tuning instrumental, one of the channels cuts out but worth checking out.
