An amazing month is GD History. There are a couple of ho hum shows here, but for the most part, this month blazes like few others can compare to. The short re-birth of St. Stephen is an obvious point worth mentioning.
Everything was in motion, Phil was firmly on, Brent was out of control, the B-3 going to early "laser gong" sounds... Jerry! Bob "Star" Weir was also great. The drummers were large and in charge here too.
Choosing the best of the month is pretty much impossible, but how about your favorite?
For me... 10/21/83... by a hair. The problem is, I love several of these shows intensely, so even this changes.
It's trite, but I chose 10/11.
I've listened to that 2nd set so much its ingrained in my memory.
the first set is solid, but that breakout Stephen out of Space stillgives me the chills. The version is not the tightest, but ridiculous energy, which continues on through the rippin JB Goode encore. Also the pre-drums is underrated and an excellent performance. Crackling with energy, well recorded and interesting -. China.Rider, Miracle>Bertha>Cool Jam>China Doll>Drums. nice.
Behind this I'd say 10/21, 10/17, 10/15 are right there with it and., 10/31 and 10/12 just a har behind .
10/8 is a personal favorite because I was there and its another "little show that could" but pales compared to these titans.
My favorite month - X factor was there in droves

I am currently going through these a second or third time as part of picking my top 64. My favorite keeps changing, but at this point I want to give some mention to 10/14. Not impressed at all with the song selection from the first set, and I am not even listening to it. Yet, the second set is just terrific. The Scarlet Fire may be a notch below 10/21 but it still is great. The Estimated/Eyes pairing is excellent and I really love the jam into drums. The Space/Spanish Jam/segue into the other one is great but I am a sucker for Spanish Jams. This one is somewhat subdued and Phil is in the background mostly but Jerry is great. The Other 1 is very good and the Stella is outstanding in the outro. Sugar Mags probably is my favorite closer and this one is very good, followed by a good US Blues. Wow!! I must admit that my choices are influenced by set lists and this is partly the case here.
I also really like 10/8 for the reasons mentioned so far. Plus, although it may not be that popular here, I really like Crazy Fingers, and this one is very heartfelt in singing and Jerry's guitar work.
10-11 gets a lot of recognition because of the return of st stephen but the china doll is what makes it my favorite of the month, and then of course there's the return of st stephen
I agree that the China Doll from 10/11 is very good and would add that the China Cat/Rider from 10/11 also is very good. However, I think the China Doll from 10/15 is almost as good as that from 10/11, the St. Steven from 10/15 seems a lot better than the one from 10/11, the China Cat/Rider from 10/15 is stronger to me and the first set from 10/15 seems better to me than the one from 10/11 (although I like the Birdsong from 10/11 a lot. Brokedown also is one of my favorite encores and the one from 10/15 is very good.
So, what do you think about 10/15 vs. 10/11, particularly as there is some overlap in set lists?
The DP sounds sterile. The AUD's from this show are where its at. Much more dynamic and "there" The Eyes kills from this show.
The Eyes is awesome, and the jam... does it get orbital? It definitely gets funkdified.
i voted for 10-14....second set is lights out. S>F is better than 10-21 1.)6-18 2.) 10-14 3.) maybe 10-21 ...thats for you koch and the Eyes KILLS....it gets funkdified big time for the last few minutes... post d/s you get a nice spanish jam > TOO and a Stella Blue you shouldn't miss and you know what the first set ain't bad either high octane bama > gset to open through Althea is pretty good..and who can forget a Day Job set 1 ender!
check the auds out specifically this one :

As soon as they listen to Richmond, they don't have to listen to any of the rest especially the overrated Stephens. The lack of a board for Richmond is one of the most heinous tricks of the Supreme. The Hartford 10/14 is right up there, and truth be told it is brutal to have to choose on any of these when faced with the slobbering teleprompter dementia we had to deal with in years to come.
