Jerry is credited with playing pedal steel guitar on American Beauty - "Sugar Magnolia", "Candyman", and "Brokedown Palace," also he is credited with the instrument on Workingman's Dead. I asked Duderino about this and other Jerry pedal steel a few weeks ago, he had a few things to say about it, apparently early '70s Look Like Rain (actually 4 8 72 LLR is killer w/ the pedal steel) includes pedal steel highlights.
Anyway, I am sure he doesn't mind, his comments were informative on my asking, I really do like pedal steel, just saw Son Volt dvd Live at Austin City Limits 96, good stuff.

|In terms of live stuff, yeah jerry was playing it on LLRain in early 72 - the Academy of Music shows in March have the pedal steel too. He played it in 87 too during a few songs in the Dylan sets - forget which songs. Other than that, I think it cropped up occasionally in 69 and 70 when they were doing some acoustic/electric stuff and of course during the NRPS period when he was pulling double duty. When they would do those mixed NRPS/Dead sets he would sometimes play pedal steel while Bob or Marmaduke sang. Also Check out 5/27/69 I think he might play it on Dire Wolf with Weir handling the vocals.
I just checked out some of the June and July 69 shows - jerry was definately playing pedal steel around this time. You can hear the country bumpkins coming out of the psychedelic monster....
Listening to 7/4/69 - these are the notes
Garcia plays pedal steel guitar for Slewfoot, Silver Threads, Let Me In, and Dire Wolf (which notably, Bob Weir sings lead).
Also Duderino mentioned Asleep at the Wheel and Texas swing.
Also checked out 7/4/69, not polished, but Slewfoot is for sure a pedal steel vehicle, too bad that one wasn't added to the repertoire of more popular songs.
