Yes thats right brothers and sisters, 38 years ago today the second greatest show ever was performed in NYC on the last day the famed Filmore East was open.....The closing of Filmore East, man what a scene. This show has it all, you want Jerry taking over? Look no further than the second set.....You want Cowboy Bobby from Hell, here it is......Pig perhaps, well what can I say it is ALL here......Now, on to the setlist. The ONLY reason this is not my #1 all time show, is because there is no Cryptical....I love the Cryptical jam too much......My other comment about the setlist, besides being the hottest fucking thing next to 2/28/69, is that it is all here, literally.....There is nothing like it out there...The performance is legendary and Obviously unreal.....There is so much going on in that place during the show, its hilarious.....Also, I think the Bill Graham rap is an essential part of the recording......I don't know how else to put it, i have probably given this show no less than 50 complete listens.......Raise you glasses because the drinks are on me, to one of the greatest days in GD history.......PEace

I did have a clever post, but I decided not to post it after all... enjoy this reprieve, and don't expect it again!

Ditto all of that, esp. the Alligator > Awesomeness> Bliss> Cold Rain part.

For more of that 71 flava -- I had 10/27/71 -- Onandaga War Memorial -- cued up this morning -- great show!

Listened to Ladies and Gentlemen again yesterday and today. There are not enough adjectives to describe the power of their playing during this run. Like Koch once described Garcia's playing The notes are like a knife goin thru hot butter. The New Yorker magazine once referred to Garcia's playing as big fat wet notes. Perfect.

Been listening to this on the commute for about a week, had no clue about the significance of the show, love the alligator drums into the jam before GDTRFB, esp the part where it sounds like they might slide into St Stephen, crowd starts reacting but they never go there.

And, in addition to all the intensity mentioned above, there's that amazing second-set sweet-spot placement for Beat It On Down The Line. Is that why Koch can't abide this show? Laughing

I guess the only way this show could have been improved (other than that missing Cryptical) is if they had swapped out the Morning Dew for a Day Job. Mr. Green

This show was one of my earliest tapes. it was labeled "Alligator at the Fillmore." I currently have the Lightning Jam after Alligator cued up on my clock-radio.

Nope, it's that it's a 1971 show... Nothing from 71 beats out the best from 72-4, just as a start... not to mention many other years. But, that's just my opinion.

I plugged this one in on my ipod and listened to it a couple of times when I had the chance lately, awesome show.
Lightning Jam after drums is fully excellent 5 star greatness.
It Hurts Me Too is a fun song as done by the Dead, doesn't get enough love, good one here.

I'm now a-tryin' to get into 1971 and started with Ladies and Gentlemen. Lots of short songs. Kind of enjoyable, though. I still don't get why any of it is up there with a 35-minute Dark Star or a hot Scarlet>Fire, but I'll keep trying. I am trying to get into pre-72 Dead, an area I've had little interest in in the past.

To me, it does not matter if a song is 3 minutes long or 35 minutes long. As long as it makes some kind of statement. Frankly, generally I find 35 minute Darkstars repellant. Lots of indulgent noodling or noise for too little payoff.

In 71 they were in a transition to 1 drummer, sort of a stripped down, rock-n-roll bar band. Some folks do not like it, but I do. They introduced tons of new tunes which obviously took time to develop, but the early Playin's, J. Straws, etc. have a certain charm to them.
Losts of smokin Hard To Handles, Bertha's, Other Ones, NFA>GDTRFB>NFA

I highly suggest listening to the Nov. and December shows with Keith
11/7, 11/14, 11/15 Shocked , 12/15, 12/10, 12/15 all kill. and 10/31 is no slouch either. There is a little more jamming later in the year
Spring - 4/5, 4/6, 4/17 and the Fillmore run which you already are familiar with.
8/6 and 8/14 are pretty cool too.
