Keeping with the spirit of Gopher's Song of the Day thread
how about naming some smokin' combo's?
My latest obsession is 1/2 Step>Franklin's from 3/24/81. the 1/2 Step is really with Jerry ripping at the end, which goes seamlessly into an energetic Franklins. Its in my car and instead of listening to the whole set, I've grooved on this three times in a row.

yeah, last one. at some point my ears perked up and i was like, "is that the intro to cumberland?" it was like the band was passing the torch from one great blues tune to another.

Estimated > Eyes from 3/21/81
I've been really into this Rainbow Theatre run the past week.
I've been familiar with 3/24 for years, 3/23 for a few years.
Now going backwards - 3/21 is an excellent show. 1st set ends with LIG>China>Rider. 2nd set does not look exciting other than the J Straw opener, but is really nice. The Estimated is perfect - killer middle jam. The Eyes is gorgeous. Powerful but not hyper fast.

Haha, that's crazy! Actually picked this after looking through some of my posts in the thread about the most recent show we listened to for the listening party the other night because I wanted to come up with something good for Swami, otherwise I would never have remembered it, I had posted this show a while ago. This cowboy combo is great.

Indeed it is!
A definite case of Bruce shaking things up. He lead the charge into Victim... and he was always trying to play the Dark Star, as we know from about 2 months before this show.

Some diss this DS, I like it, short and sweet. I don't personally need a long DS to be happy at all.

Interestingly there was more than one Bucket>Fire
I remember one that had a great Bucket and a shitty fire...
Here is what I could find of the oddball combo...

09-08-87 Providence Civic Center, Providence, R.I. (Tue)
09-24-87 The Spectrum, Philadelphia, Pa. (Thu) (I am fairly certain this is the sucky one)
And this one.... I guess I ought to check out the first one, as I am checking out this final one now. Jerry was hot in the bucket thus far.

What grabs me about that version is Bobby's playing. He plays so loud that it's hard to even hear Jerry.

I like the second one above a lot, particularly the transition both into and out of MAMU. This is my favorite part of this show, even though the Hard To Handle may get more attention (I like this also - very energetic playing from jerry)

May need to give this show another listen soon as I have been focusing on 80s stuff and Garcia/Saunders lately and this is a good change of pace.

Show has a sweet backend - Wheel>Playin'>GDTRFB>Sugar Mag. The jam after the Wheel is quasi-baroque. I dont recall the China Rider but will check it out. Are there any new sources for this show, because the original is rotten.

I have no idea about new sources. Lately I have only had time to listen to a few songs so I end up going through my library.

Well, speaking of April 83...

4/10/83

UJB>PITB
Jerry's Cup o' X runneth over big time in the UJB! Holy shit!
The PITB is also solid, and a bit longer, but the UJB is the key!

Show has some rough spots - an especially wretched Terrapin which Jerry mumbles through. 4/26 is a far better show. 4/10 is pretty decent Samson opener on a Sunday was cool and the 2nd set has a nice flow- I was at WVU, Hampton and Philly shows that tour.

That 4/10 Samson is off the charts! Perhaps my new favorite performance of Touch to open the second set as well.

Estimated >Eyes 3/27/86.

Bobby is allover the Estimated shredding his vocals followed by a Eyes that is played at breakneck speed, but still clocks in at about 18 mins with an extended jam tacked onto the back end. A heavy portion of Garcia noodles with a bit of Wah pedal sauce is a nice touch.

Forgot all about this one and might have to go back to edit my Maine Road trips selection,

Yeah, that Eyes is pretty cool and jammy for a low-jam year. totally underrated show. Love the 1st set with the rare choices and placements.
Wang Dang had not been played in 2 years then they follow it up with Bertha.
I might be in the minority but I love Revolutionary Hamstrung.
Back end is more "normal" but well played.

Great show within 86 standards, no doubt. Nice Supplication Jam out of nowhere in the first set.

Scarlet>Fire 8/27/81 San Diego.
High energy, flawless, great interplay. Highly recommended! The Samson that precedes it is high octane too.

Revisiting some of my backyard shows. Lived 3 blocks from The Knick during this tour. Awful, awful neighborhood, but it was lovely this week.

Eyes>Estimated>Comes A Time 2nd set opener

Really nice solo @ 5:50 of Eyes, angry Bob vocals on Estimated.

Actually a pretty good all around show;
if you don't mind Phil on Broken Arrow "There you Gowwwwww"
I don't.

Big surprise here for me to dip into anything beyond 93 but this combo delivers. Jerry in on with his guitar playing.

From a great second set with Dancin > Franklin's to open it. I think there may be a short orbital jam at the end of TOO...i'll post about it in the orbital jammage thread

6-16-74 Eyes> Big River was/is jawdropping. A heavenly segue and I still recall being flumoxed as I was grooving to my first live Eyes of the Wold as I watched the clouds chase one another in the Iowa sky suspended above the Wall of sound and suddenly we were neckdeep into headshakin' Johnny Cashland with Garcia bending those carressing and bouncing notes around us all as we explored Big River.
No wonder I was hooked then and there.

Good pick on the NFA>Easy Wind from 6/24/70. This is only one part that I love from this show.

Yeah that show is classic. Great audience recording too. The only weak part is that early, partly developed Sugar Mag, but then again its only snippet surroduned by 2 great Darkstar jams!

An awesome one no doubt.
This DS is probably one of the fastest paced DSs out there (along with 10/16/89), just loved it. Its almost as though, and perhaps it was planned before, they knew they were going to go into a hard driving Cumberland.

Good call Fillmore, if there is anyone who hasn't heard this, you need to give it a spin immediately.

Without doubt-One of my favorite pieces of music by the band. Dug your review of this show!

Thanks for bringing this one up. I've neglected it for much too long. One of those weird combos that actually worked without a major hick-up. The whole damn show is hot......scratch that..... the whole tour is incredible!!!

8/10/82 a Koch special

On the Road Again>BIODTL

Normally BIODTL does nothing for me but this version is pretty tight. Try listening to the few minutes before On the Road and you will hear the boys discussing what to play next and how to make a smoothe transition. Needless to say they blow the transition that results in Bobby throwing in a " just like a Swiss watch" in the first verse. They recover nicely and nail the BIODTL. Ya might like Koch Very Happy

Nice Franklins. This is a well played show. Actually this whole NYE run was pretty damn good. 12/27 is a VERY solid show with a great Scarlet Fire and 12/28 reaches height of almost epicness (sweet setlist)

4/19/86 Crazy Fingers>Playin.
Only 2 songs before drums, but holy shit! Crazy Fngers is pretty good, Jerry flubs only a few times, sweet jam, but then it launches into a 22 minute Playin with intensity, insanity and many twists and turns. A true monster Playin. Yes, people in 1986.

See!!! They are there! Might need to start a Jammy 86 pre-Drums Thread. I'm feelin it! I know there is a Huge Alpine show from the summer as well as a Greek show that I think was just Playin>Uncle John's. I'll get to work on it!

Sugaree>Bucket 12/28/87.
Well jammed Sugaree leading into a sizzling Bucket. Great way to end a 1st set.
The China>Rider to open Set 2 is ridiculously high energy too.

Nice FOB recording too!

2/8/70 Stephen>NFA>Stephen

Extra cool because they skip the "lady finger" bridge and jump right into NFA instead, then Jer seemlessly threads the Stephen riff back under Bobby's final NFA vocals. Tasty.

China Cat>Rider 10/5/84 Charlotte
Man oh man a STELLAR, MAGICAL version. The jam is transcendent. Actually, this whole show is smokin, other than the sound issues on Bertha and bob's vocal flubs on Stranger.
