Scarlet>Fire - 3/1/87

Whoa Jerry!
Very surprising, considering how I feel about '87-'88.

I followed a tip from here about the 12/12/69 UJB>Friend a few days ago and enjoyed it so much that this morning I went for:

3/21/70 He Was a Friend>Viola Lee>Seven>Cumberland.
ka-BAM!

and since I haven't posted in a while, I almost lost my mind the other night to the Eyes>jam>NFA from 1/14/78. Love those Jan 78 auds, and love those quasi-Close Encounters Jerry jams!

Crazy Fingers>Wharf Rat>LET IT GROW 1976-06-03

Garcia's vocals on Crazy Fingers is excellent. Wharf Rat is the same. Then we get a great Bob rocker with an 18 minute LIG.

5/18/77 - Other One> Stella

Nice to still find hidden gems inside such a legendary month. Overshadowed by surrounding shows, this one in mainly known for its unique Jack-A-Roe. But don't miss this giant combo. Is this the longest, slowest Stella ever (at 15+ minutes!)?

Good call!!! Although I can understand why some may not like the Stella Blue because it is so slow paced, it is one of my absolute favorites for both the lead-in guitar part and the ending one. I find it jaw-dropping in its beauty. The Eyes also is worth mentioning, particularly for the long rolling lead-in. It goes on for about 5 minutes. Although I do not subscribe to the notion that longer is better, I love this lead-in.

yeah! First time they did the Feelin Groovy transition jam before Rider, right? This is a great one for those who think 73 first sets are snoozy. Hard to believe that they were at Pigpen's funeral a week before...

The banter is better than usual, too Smile
Quote:

Phil: We're gonna take a minute to tune up, and do all those other important things which make it possible for us to give you our best. Can't cook without grease, man! Bob Weir said that.

Bob: We were gonna wear our gorilla suits tonight, but we lost the key to the wardrobe trunk. So it's the usual--

Phil: --Besides, there's enough gorillas in this world without us wearing our gorilla suits--

Bob: --so it's the usual Bozo masks, y'know.

Jerry: All you people throwing joints up here on the stage--

Phil: Save it!

Jerry: Why don't you light 'em up and pass 'em around?

Phil: Pass 'em to your neighbor, man. We're already high, thank you! No no, save it.

Bob: We get high on you guys.

Phil: That ain't gonna do nobody no good, man. What a waste! I mean, dope is expensive, isn't it?

Bob: And if you gotta throw anything heavy out there, anything heavy that might hurt somebody, just make sure you're throwing it at somebody you don't like.

Listened to the show in it's entirety Yesterday and today and I think the first set is stronger than the second. First set ends as strong as it began with a outa sight Playin' preceded by a very nice Bird Song. I'm not sure about If that's the first Groovy jam or not. Glad you like it though Very Happy I wrote a little blurb about this show yesterday in the TDIH thread if you care to check it out.

[quote="dogstarz"]1974-07-31 Truckin>MLB>Spanish>Wharf Rat Cool[/quote Was at this show in Hartford (Dillon Stadium) Three sets! Although I still enjoy listening to it...there's something about this show that's a little off. Kind of like there running on seven cylinders instead of eight. Anyway my pick for today is Eyes>China Doll...6/18/74 Cool

Agreed on 6/16/74. Eyes>Big River deserves a mention! Bananas. I love the crazy synth noise in Playin, too, which is apparently Keith cutting loose a bit -- Ned Lagin hadn't joined the tour yet, I believe? Yikes!

So I broke a short GD hiatus this morning with 12/2/73. As much of a staple 73 show as that is, I always forget how out of left field the jam setlist is:

Wharf Rat>Half Step>Playin>MLB>He's Gone>Truckin>Stella

Shocked

I also forgot how smooth this Truckin jam is. Jerry at his laid back Crawlin' King Snake best, taking his time with absolutely no place to rush to. Wish there was a whole lot more like that...

That whole show was amazing. It is a shame only some of the second set got released as DP2. But what a release that was!!!

Yeah, 10/31/71 has that beautiful jam after GDTRFB, but 11/15 is another level altogether. The jam in NFA is one of my pinnacle Dead moments. The rest is almost anticlimactic -- though pretty much anything would be, given that this is the only show where NFA outshines Dark Star! Smile

Lovelight>GDTRFB>NFA>Bo Diddley>NFA from "Steppin Out"
First two are from 5/7/72 and the NFA sandwich is from 5/23, but it all sounds like one seamless jam to me. Smokin stuff.!!!

12/27/80, the Eyes>jam>drums. I knew the China>Rider was a bomber, but I hadn't paid close enough attention to this tasty little jam before the drums. Some cool Bob progressions, some trippy echo, some whale songs, and a totally satisfying coda to a fine Eyes.

8/6/74 playin>scarlet> playin reprise .......was a little tired at around 2pm today at work listening to this excellent sandwich....perked right up when donna scared the [CENSORED] out of me and got my blood pumping during the playin reprise with a horrible noise. Other than that, i really love this playin' sandwich
