I will say it. I am not a fan of the revival of Cryptical. It was great in the original run of the song. It just seemed to lack something that I can't pin down.

I like the new HCS... not as good as the originals by any means, but still cool. The opened the 2nd set of my first show with it, and it blew me away.

HCS clicked sometimes, mainly a matter of getting the vocal harmonies right. I'm not sure why they felt like they needed to start that one a capella.

I agree with this 100%... and will add, what was missing was 2 things...
1) Decent singing
2) Jamming

These were awful renditions... not one cryptical jam, which is where the action was!

Playing the right notes and remembering any of the words might be two of the more important missing things...

the Cosmic Charlies of 1976 overall were heading in a direction that the Originals didn't, however I don't think it ever got to where it was, let alone because of the premature re-death, didn't get to where it could have

wouldn't trade those dozen or so from 1976 for anything though

To Lay Me Down when they brought it back in 88', always a song i skip.
Unbroken Chain; should have just kept it in the studio

i have to agree with you on the latter two, but the To Lay Me Down revival is a favorite of mine.

I will agree with Gopher here with Death Don't Have No Mercy For My Ears. Younger Garcia nailed it with soul that was lost in 89.

I'll add a 3rd thing -
PRACTICE!
Actually the last one at Starlight 9/3/85 is pretty decent. I think if they would have stuck to it, it would have improved but Jerry really was not into it. Probably thought it sounded dated.

It honestly did seem kind of dated...
