I have been listening to the Bluegrass channel on XM and am really enjoying it.
Anyone have any recommendations, preferably live recordings on the archive.
The only band I can think of that's on archive that is really good is Cornmeal.

Ricky Scaggs & Kentucky Thunder

Scaggs went through a country phase I guess, but he is back to BG... he is probably the biggest name in BG at the moment (and for some time)... Hornsby tours with him sometimes.

Try google blog searches if you can't bit torrent.

I just did some searches and came across this:

"The grass is Dead"....they play GD bluegrass style....listening to Althea now, pretty cool...some Eyes of the World riffs mixed in there too.

Check out Steve Martin's new disc. Yes the movie actor, SNL alum. He is a beast on the banjo. Also there is the Yonder Mountain String Band. They deliver original songs along with Pink Floyd and Talking Head covers. They are also on LMA.

I'll write back more tomorrow but I gotta run - I love (and play) bluegrass.
Doc Watson, Clarence White, Tony Rice and Norman Blake are all amazing guitarists you should check out. Clarence is my favorite guitar player other than Jer...

For me: Hayseed Dixie, Old Crow Medicine Show

Dave

For my money: Pickin' on the Grateful Dead NOT. That whole concept needs composting.

Yeah, Old Crow Medicine Show is awesome. I'm not sure if I would call it "bluegrass" - more like new string band music or something. Nonetheless they are very good - especially the new cd.
For old school bluegrass Del McCoury is amazing. From the same high lonesome vein as Bill Monroe, etc..he also collaborates with alot of younger musicians. He is on archive.

For other stuff on archive - check out the Infamous Stringdusters - really good. and Smooth Kentucky - Baltimore based band who is pretty damn good as well.

Can anyone recommend specific songs?
Looking for lightning fast banjo with little singing, if any at all.
Don't really care for cheesy lyric/singing delivery that come with bluegrass.

You can get this on Amazon (cd only) - The Kentucky Colonels - "Appalachian Swing" - all instro, bluegrass classic from the 60's.
Another great band is The Seldom Scene - "Live From The Cellar Door" is a classic. They do a great version of I Know You Rider.
And of course Flatt and Scruggs - Earl Scruggs could pick that banjer...

Check out anything with "breakdown" in the title. Earl Scruggs is good.

Dave

Also, no one has mentioned this fairly obscure band of amateur hacks - they were active back in the 70's called OLD AND IN THE WAY...... Wink

Don't forget the reformation called Old and in the Grey. Half the band was new people. Still Grisman was in top form. Hmm I am goin to find that disc now.

Welcome.
I saw part of Hot Buttered Rum's set when they opened for DSO. Really talented "new grass" - thoguht they were really good. Unfortunately we got to the show late and only saw about 4 songs. But that night I dug them more than DSO, who played a fairly lame original setlist.

Yeah I've seen HBR a couple of times. They put on a good show.

I really like Cornmeal (referenced in the original post). They get into some really spacey jams, as well as the more 'traditional' bluegrass. Interestingly, several of their members also play in Terrapin Flyer.

No you did not hallucinate! We played Sat night - it went pretty well - decent receptive crowd and thee were no trainwrecks. We were worried about pulling off a few of the tunes but managed pretty well. Thanks fer askin!

Duderino hit most of the greats, but don't overlook:
Allison Krause and Union Station (especially with Jerry Douglas)
Good Ol' Boys
Hot Rize
New Grass Revival

But Ricky Scaggs and Kentucky Thunder kick ass.

Oh yeah, Rhonda Vincent had a good band for a while.

I saw Larry Keel and Natural Bridge last night. Larry and his wife Jenny have played with Keller Williams in a band called Keller and The Keels. Larry has a voice that reminds me of Tom Waits but he can pick a guitar and mandolin with the best.

The latest bluegrass mandolin prodigy. She's quite talented. Her new album sounds a lot like AKUS.

Please do. It does me no good (other than listening to it) just having it on a shelf. Music is to be shared.

I might have to grab some of this too. I play guitar in a bluegrass/country/roots band and lately have been really getting deep into the grass. I have one of those Rice/Blake shows - amazing. Along with Clarence White, those 2 are what I strive to play like. And uh..Jerry...
Will you do B&P's??

How does this sound:
STEVE EARLE & DEL McCOURY
Stockholm, Sweden 5-11-99
I love that album they put out together.

I'd also like to check out the Monroe and Stanley shows at the venue in Rising Sun, MD - the place is still there, still hosting bluegrass shows.

Okay folks, I am such a fan of Old & In The Way I've decided I need to have it ALL! These are the shows/dates that I have.

The First Album
1973-03-02
1973-06-06
1973-07-21
1973-07-23
1973-07-24
1973-10-01
1973-10-08
1973-11-04
And the only '74 show where they were part of a big festival

Is there more? Who has it? Help me please!!!
