Awesome work here... Haven't read it all yet... couldn't wait to ask this question.

Do you generally like GD w/ Sax?

Obviously your comments on 3/29/90 eyes bring this question to my mind. I notice there are two types of folks about the GD & sax... the yes, and the no.
Very few in between folks.

One more quick comment. 11/5/79 was Eyes>Estimated>Franklins wasn't it?

Now I will continue to read.

I have been told that there is a audience source being torrented very soon for 7/8/90.
i am eagerly anticipating it as i was at this show as well and have grown tired of listening to my SBD tapes of this show.
thanks for the awesome post r&s. i am going to read it now.

I remember being a cheerleader for the GD/Branford collaboration at the time. I was really into jazz then, and thought it was about the best thing ever. However, in retrospect, I've got to say that as good as Marsalis is, he is a double-edged sword. Sure, he inspires Jerry somewhat -- gives him something to riff off of -- but he also takes up space that Jerry would otherwise fill. Also, his interplay with the Dead during the verses and choruses of the songs sounds really contemporary rock to me. His strength is in the spacey parts.

So while 3/29 and 12/31 are both great versions of Eyes (and great shows), I would not put those versions in my tops for the year. They are not the versions that I'd choose to listen to most days.

There is (or was) one available recently that I DL'd. I would actually like to hear the SBD source -- or maybe a matrix would be the best.

Update: Here's the AUD that recently appeared at LMA...

Damn man, nice work ! I still think it was after the Branford version that Eyes took a whole new direction. The Knickibocker version is the birth, but it really formed after Branford played on it. Perhaps Jerry saw the tune a little differently with the help of Branford. The pace became "right" after that night. If that makes sense to anyone.

Upon further review...

Here's a little update. Apparently, I've been under the false impression that Eyes>Estimated was actually a pretty common combo after 1990. Turns out that it didn't really happen very often. In fact, it only happened 13 times ever -- 11 of those in the 90s.

Just so happens that I got Eyes> Estimated> Terrapin in the first and third shows that I ever saw, leading me to believe that this was kind of a standard combination. I guess I was just lucky. Of course, this trio only happened five times. Those two I saw were the first two. The three other times were all at Oakland Coliseum, spread out over the next 3-4 years.

Great stuff....

Random notes:

03/19/90 Jerry's MIDI in the ending-jam sound exactly like an upright bass, but if memory serves you can actually hear Phil's bass at the same time - proving that Jerry is making those sounds. Unique.

3/25/90 and 3/29/90 - agree on their relative mediocrity

06/17/90 - I find the pace to be not too slow, and Brent kills in this one.

07/14/90 - Phil is in top form during this Eyes-Estimated along with Brent-ski: fine version.

09/08/90 - Spectacular - best of the year that I've heard (I generally agree with S&R's take on Bruce & Branford's impact, and find that I actually prefer Vince only).

Very insightful - some of these I need to revisit, including 7/8/90.

Wow, I thought Eyes>Estimated was rampant from '90 on too. I must have just stumbled into a bunch of them.

MSG is too too keyboard. Interesting version as a novelty.
