I was listening to 7/12/87 and came across an interesting Take A Step Back. It has left such an impression on me that I've actually gone back and listened to it again. I thought it was a little amusing as I began to see this portion of the show in a new light. Since then, I've been sorta poking around the archive for other notable Step Backs. Any that come to mind?

I think there is one... 6/10/90?
I can't be sure right now though... it has some distortion on the voices, etc.

Someone at archive.org commented that Garcia plays Cornell University's alma mater during a 5/7/80 Step Back at Barton Hall..... kinda cool, in my opinion.

6/24/83 Madison, WI show that Gopher just reviewed in the Brent section has a pretty sweet Take A Step Back, but it is cut, and there is only one version of that recording up at the archive.

I don't know the dates but I have heard Bobby say, "We're going to take a quick nap, we'll be back." Always cracked me up.

I like the take a step back when Bob says there are spiders on the stage, 10/31/79 comes to mind.

10/20/84 has at least two step-back interludes, only one of which is labeled. 5-9-79 has a pretty serious one that goes on for a long time and apparently stops the show for a while.

Hey Gopher, let me know if you think of any more of these. I remember a tape from high school daze, but all I can recall is Jerry going off on a rap about "everybody knows there's snakes down there and they come out slitherin' around or something to that effect, while the band riffs in the background

10/31/79 is a sweet show by the way. That's almost a setlist I would have created if the band had ever called me and asked for my input. Smile

So, someone once hypothesized that these Take A Step Backs all occured on the East Coast... can anyone verify or deny this?

I have read that east coast crowds are more intense than the west coast crowds. So this is a possibility.

Step Backs have been sprinkled all the way up the East Coast, from Florida to Maine. Although I've found evidence of this phenomenon as far west as Wisconsin, not a single one has been spotted along the West Coast.

Nice! What's the date on the WI one? That is important info...

I would like to hear of just ONE on the W Coast...

I also don't think, dogstarz, it so much a function of the their actual PLAYING on the East Coast, as much as it is a function of the CROWDs on the East Coast... Case in point... Berkeley 1984 run... tell me those shows aren't loaded with energy and power, yet no take a step backs that I am aware of...

Got to see them on both coasts and have to say that the West Coast had a really different vibe than the East Coast did. More laid back and jammy while the East Coast was more rock and roll. Energy was more hyper on the East as well.

Can't say which one I preferred though. It was such a nice change of pace both ways that I enjoyed both scenes.

I did mean the crowds. Sorry for any confusion. :)

Excellent answer Lucas. I think that is the most correct answer anyone could give on this subject.

Well, Wisconsin is still east of the Mississippi.
That 10 31 79 which cowboysth24 and Gopher were talking about is a pretty good double one, great show.
8 4 74 Philly, which was Dick's Pick'd, has a couple.

Bobby often sounds angry during the Step Backs. He seems to be sensitive to seeing the people in the front get all bug-eyed. However, the music never lacks because of it. I've found that if you are searching for a song through Deadbase Online and you type "Step Back" in the Comment field, you will, in most instances, find a high-energy version of that tune.

I've been searching for that one for quite some time. I think they do "take a step back" twice if I remember right. I also think there was a MAMU in there and at the end of the second someone says something to the effect of - the hell with it, just play. I think they actually had some music and crazy voices to go along with the rattlesnakes.

Of course this could also be two or three "tasb" being misremembered from the cassette days!

In any case I remeber it being a hot sequence of tunes, probably first set, and would like to hear it again if anyone can place the date.

has a pretty long one before the second set, the band announces that everyone must clear the aisles and play everyone's fun game Get Back to Your Seat in order to appease authorities, and they play the Mexican Hat Dance and some other stuff while they wait for the stubborn audience to move while begging them to sit down.
