Today David Lemieux appeared on a local Dead radio show and revealed some
amazing news....he recently discovered a couple missing reels from the
Jan/Feb '68 tour!
Well, just hearing that, my jaw was already on the floor.

He was promoting the upcoming Terrapin '77 release, so he didn't have time
to play much, but he played a couple selections, never heard before -
First, the ENCORE from Portland 2/2/68 - DARK STAR! (I think the only Star
encore besides 7/13/84?) For one of the early five-minute versions with
Pigpen's little riff, it's pretty good - and even better, it ends without
going into another song, but just stops! Very unique. (Weir sounds like he's
ready to go into China Cat, but they decide to say "see you tomorrow"
instead.)
But even better was the next selection - from the missing reel of Seattle
1/23/68 - VIOLA LEE! And this is not a loose version like the one from
Tahoe - this is a serious, amazing, 20-minute MONSTER that stands up next to
2/2/68 and 9/3/67 - Garcia's playing is just VICIOUS! Pigpen is right
up-front, playing twin leads with Garcia all the way through - they build
and build, and then suddenly in the middle drop down, change their tone, and
start building again - when the meltdown finally comes, it's bone-crushing!
There's also some funny banter beforehand -
Phil: "The cops say you can't dance."
Jerry: "But they didn't say you can't take off your clothes and wriggle
around!"

I have to say, whatever else is on those reels (he didn't say), this is one
of the most awesome discoveries in Dead history. Where on earth was it
hiding for 41 years?
Now, this stuff is still held by Lemieux in the vault, so I don't know if or
when more will emerge - maybe he will leak the rest, or put some on the
taper's section. (I'd recommend sending a request to him at

)

(By the way, he also revealed some interesting background to the Steppin'
Out in England '72 set....originally it was to be 5 discs, and the extra
disc was going to be either the Dark Star>Other One medley from 5/7/72, or
the UJB>Wharf Rat>Dark Star medley from 5/25/72. But they decided to keep it
at 4 discs instead, so it wouldn't be so jam-heavy....)

This comes on the heels of some more '68 excitement - Charlie Miller, of
course, recently put out a series of the Jan/Feb '68 shows in improved
quality - and he even uncovered this previously unknown Midnight Hour which
he says is from '68, but others speculate it's from '69. Either way, though
nice to have, it's not the most exciting version, sounding very tired and
lacking Jerry-sparks (perhaps it was the end of a show) - Pigpen spends
quite a bit of time trying to get the audience to stand up!
